Once again I had the sweet little hands of Ella to help me in the kitchen. Ella is only three years old but she has already developed a love of cooking. My son, Nick, has yet to develop this love so it warms my heart to have sweet Ella be my special helper in the kitchen.
Last weekend Ella and I made Pumpkin Dump Cake during her Momma and my weekend visit to our friend Luann’s house. Nothing better than a weekend of rest, relaxation, renewal, good friends, and a precious three-year-old covered in cake mix and chocolate
Ella and I hope you enjoy our Dump Cake as much as we enjoyed making it. Maybe there are little hands that you can invite into your kitchen?
Pumpkin Dump Cake
- 30 oz can pumpkin pie filling or mix (not plain pumpkin)
- 18.25 oz box yellow cake mix
- 1 stick butter (not margarine) (that’s 1/2 cup for my friends in Canada
) - 1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans (use walnuts if you prefer them to pecans)
- whipped cream
- nutmeg (optional)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 13×9 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
Spread the pumpkin pie filling/mix evenly in the bottom of the baking dish. Cover with the cake mix. Sprinkle the cake mix with the chocolate chips and the pecans.
Cut the butter into small cubes and evenly “dot” the top of the cake.
Bake for 40-45 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with whipped cream sprinkled with a light dusting of nutmeg if desired. (Also good plain or with ice cream.)
Sweetest Blessings,
LeAnn

I am printing this out and making this autumnal treat soon!!! My friend just told me to go to Trader Joe’s and stock up on the pumpkin pie filling….it’s the best and they only have it seasonally!
My favorite part of this recipe:
“butter (not margarine)”
Warm hugs,
Sharon
Yummmm…we’re having Pastor Appreciation in a few weeks and I think I’ll give this one a try!!
Sounds fantastic – just a clarification: is the cake sprinkled on dry or do I prepare it first and then put it over the pumpkin?
Oh LeaAnn what perfect timing!! I had forgotten about Pumpkin Dump Cake – and your recipe is much simpler than mine so I can’t wait to try it tonight! Thank you!!!
Hi Jessie!
Yes, you just use the dry cake mix. Sprinkle it directly over the pumpkin. That’s what makes this so simple
Blessings,
LeAnn
In the oven right now!
Oh thank you so much for posting this recipe. I cannot wait to try it. Please post more pumpkin recipes!
Oh, I can’t wait to try this! I am not much of a pumpkin fan but my husband is! I’m sure he will love it! I think I will give it a go this weekend. Have a blessed day!
Oh, my, my, my. I now have a new reason to hit the gym this fall. This looks fabulous!
Thanks for making me look so good. I took this cake to a church yesterday. Someone even told me it was the bomb!! So easy and good. Great for fall. Thanks LeAnn
LeeAnn,
This is a wonderful dessert for this time of year! I made it for our retired “Prime Time” luncheon at church on Saturday and everyone raved about it. Already put it in my recipe favorites!
Thanks so much
I think I hear the brush of angels wings!
Yum!
This was a huge hit with our small group! Thanks so much for this easy recipe. And I also made a portion of it with a gluten free cake mix for one in our group.
Thanks for answering my question LeAnn – I forgot to put the butter on so couldn’t figure out why I had powdered pumpkin with chocolate chips on it. However, I was able to save it by putting the butter on and sticking it back in the oven. Even the kids ate it
LeAnne,
My daughter made this for me to take for Birthday Day at the Senior Center yesterday 29 October. It smelt so good cooking. My friends really enjoyed it and needless to say my pan was empty when I brought it home.
Thanks for posting all these good recipes.
