In the first week of Lysa’s Made to Crave webcast, Dr. Chilton explained that our bodies were made to go into famine mode after three weeks of depriving ourselves of foods that we were used to. At that point our bodies try to hold on to everything! We hit a plateau and stop losing weight. This is the point where we become discouraged and, many times, give up on our new healthy eating plan.
My sweet friends… do not quit! I am here to tell you that you can do this. I have struggled with my weight for my entire life. I can’t tell you how many diets I tried and then failed. Each time I put on a couple extra pounds than what I had lost before I gave up. Basically, I got bigger with each failed attempt. I was so discouraged that I cried myself to sleep many nights. I felt like a total failure. I felt unattractive, undeserving of love or friendship, unsuccessful and unworthy of any good that came to me. But God does not put qualifiers on His love for me… and I shouldn’t either. Nor should YOU!
God’s love for me was no less when I weighed 199 pounds… than it is at 150.
Ya’ll I truly struggled with the decision to show you my “before” photo. But my desire to encourage your heart was stronger than my fear of humiliation. Yup… I luv ya that much!
OK – Brace yourself…
Before
And Now (I’m not saying “after” because this is a journey that I am still on!)
I promise you… if I can do it… YOU can do it. I had many obstacles, including an undiagnosed thyroid condition, but I decided to put value on myself. When I look in the mirror I try to see myself as God sees me. I look past my double chin and puffy eyes and I see His precious daughter, beautifully and wonderfully made. If I can’t see myself as perfect, it’s an insult to my Creator.
OK – Let’s get practical. We all know that this isn’t easy. It’s not simply a matter of looking at ourselves and saying, “I can do this. I deserve better.” If it was this easy no one would be overweight or undertall. We need each other. We need help, hope, and encouragement. So what has helped me?
- I changed my mindset. I didn’t look at my journey as a weight loss journey… it wasn’t about trying to “look” better. It was about accepting myself the way God created me and wanting to improve my physical health so that I can do more for Him and for my family. It’s about getting healthy. I am a single mom. My husband, Nick’s dad, died of cancer when Nick was only three years old. If I end up with diabetes or heart disease, what kind of uncaring mom does that make me? I need to be healthy for my son.
- If you don’t already have a copy of Made to Crave you must get it now. Trust me. This book is life-changing. Lysa shares her own struggles and inspires you in ways you cannot imagine. This book will help you find the “want to.”
- Get support. Tell your friends and family that you want to get healthy and ask them to help you. I work alongside amazingly beautiful (and thin) women. They love me regardless of how I look. But they supported my efforts by removing any temptations that used to find their way into our candy dishes. The entire office stopped eating stuff that I shouldn’t have as a show of support. They encouraged me and shouted for joy with every pound lost.
- Find an accountability partner. It really helps if you can do this with someone else. If you are tempted, ask them to talk you off the ledge. And… you do the same for them. My accountability partner, Melissa Taylor, just caught me with a tiny slice of a chocolate frosted brownie. It was just a tiny bite! But she saw it in my hand and slapped it out! Yes she did! I may have called her an ugly name. But I took it back. She did exactly what I asked her to do and I love her for it. That tiny bite may have led to another… then another… then another… An intervention was necessary
- Surround yourself with positive and encouraging words. Lysa has put together an awesome list of “go-to scripts.” You can find them in the back of Made to Crave or you can download a printable PDF HERE. When Nick was trying to learn memory verses for school each week, I printed the week’s verse out and taped it to his bathroom mirror, the cereal cabinet door, on his computer monitor, etc. Wherever he was likely to be, he looked up to see the verse. It worked. He absorbed the verse. You can do the same with the encouragement Lysa has provided. Take her go-to scripts and cut them out and tape them to your refrigerator door, the pantry, the snack cabinet, etc.
- Find joy in something other than food
I find joy in music. I can sing out praises (or show tunes), only when no one is listening, of course, and it makes me feel happy and joyful. How about calling a girlfriend or two and enjoying a girls night out. See a chick flick and laugh out loud together!
These are just a handful ideas to keep you encouraged. And here are some practical ideas:
- See a doctor! I went to a naturopathic physician for a complete blood workup. She was able to diagnose (and treat) a thyroid condition as well as other areas that were lacking in my overall health. If you are in the Charlotte area, I highly recommend Dr. Michelle Dillon. If you live outside this area, ask for a referral. See someone who you trust!
- Brush your teeth! Yup… after each meal, brush your teeth. I find that I am not likely to snack in between meals when I have that just brushed feeling!
- Chew gum. You won’t grab a handful of chips if you are chewing gum.
- Drink lots of water after you eat. Your stomach will stay full so you won’t snack.
- Don’t eat after 6:00pm. You may need to choose a different time, based on your schedule. I find that eating after 6:00pm puts on the pounds, even when I eat good stuff!
- Download Dr. Chilton’s Go Guide for his nutritional recommendations. You can find it HERE. His guide is filled with great nutritional information that you can take with you to the grocery store to help you make smart choices.
Friends, if you are on this journey with me, I pray that you stay encouraged. I know how easy it is to give up and feel defeated. But you are worth so much more. Remember… God loves you, and so do I.
So… what are ways that you stay encouraged?
Sweetest Blessings,
LeAnn

You look awesome!! Keep up the good work!! I have not started yet–but it is coming!!!!
LeAnn: You go girl! Thank you for being vulnerable and showing us your before and now photos. I keep my own “before” photo in a file on my laptop. When I get discouraged (or tempted) I go back and look at it to remind myself why I don’t want to go there. Thanks for sharing
Applauding!!!!
What was that LeeBird said … “you rock!”
I agree!! And I so appreciate your courage and your love for JESUS and us in sharing!!
Thank you!!
Holy hugs, Kathie
Thank you so much for this blog today! I actually linked it from Lysa’s. I really needed this! I am so discouraged today and I needed to read this encouragement even though you don’t know me! I have battled weight all my life. I lost 50 lbs and was were I wanted to be and thought I would never put any weight back on! Wrong! I have put back on 28 lbs and it is even harder this time. I will keep trying! Thank you again for this blog!
I so applaud your success. And I want to thank you for your encouragement. But I do need to say that when I read your words; “brace yourself” if made me sad. In saying that, it made me think that we are not okay where we are, overweight and all. I understand that we need to be healthy, and being overweight is not. I have been thin, and I am at a place where I need to lose about 35 lbs. It just makes me sad that when we loose weight we are told we look good, when we can look good at a higher weight as well. You are right, God loves for us is not dependent on our weight or how we look. We say this, but do we really believe it?
You were beautiful before LeAnn, and you’re beautiful now
Work it out LeAnn!!!!
This is encouraging. Thank you.
Thank you, thank you. Your post was so very encouraging and your tips were very helpful. You are doing great and are truly an inspiration inside and out. Keep up the great dedication!
Thank You so much for being vulnerable and bearing your before and after photo’s.
You are beautiful!!! Congratulations!!!!
I cannot thank you enough for posting this today! It was just what I needed as discouragement has been knocking on the door. I too have battled weight my entire life. There are times it’s been under control but most of my adult life has been lived as “pleasantly plump”. The hardest thing for me right now is that I am extremely limited with what I can do for exercise due to tarsal tunnel in one foot. Thank you for your transparency!
this was very encouraging, thank you!
LeAnn,
I am 23 lbs into this journey and you give me hope. I’m a ways behind you, but I know I can do it. I agree with the comments that you were beautiful then and now. I see your beauty!!! Great job!
You look mahvalous dahling…Too bad I only have a before picture, me right now…ha, ha….looking forward to having an after picture in 30 pounds.
You go girl!
LeAnn, you may not know this but I just love ya! Ever since I found your blog recently I have just talked about you to anyone who will listen in blogging. I did a post sharing your button the other day. I don’t know, you just inspire me and you have a sweet spirit on your blog and I’m sure IN REAL LIFE and now seeing and reading here tonight I have to say, you are beautiful in both photos!!! You inspire me.
I can’t wait to obtain my Made to Crave book, DVD and guide. I know it’s awesome!
I appreciate you! Praying for you while you keep moving forward…
Gorgeous Girl of God!!!! Wow, you are so inspiring. I’m going to email this post to the 7 other women that are in my Monday night group I’m leading in “Made to Crave”. Great job LeAnn and keep doing a great job! Rooting for you.
Hey girl, I think you look awesome !!! From your words, I take it you are pretty beautiful inside also. Keep up the good work and thank you for the ideas and encouraging words. God knows I need them right now.
You are so right! I would look at any other woman, regardless of their size, and I would say (and mean) that they were beautiful. But… when it’s myself, I sure do have a harder time.
LeAnn, thank you for being so transparent. I needed this today and God spoke to me through you. We have extremely similar weight struggles/weight loss issues and this was a blessing for me today as I have hit a plateau of late. This has encouraged me to press on. Thank you again and proud of you for what you have allowed God to accomplish through you! Blessings!
Way to go! Thank you for sharing! You have no idea how encouraging that is! Keep it up and I pray that I can do this, too! I’ve already lost 34 lbs, but lost my motivation last November. I need to get it back!
LeAnn – sister LOL you cracked me up with that brownie tidbit! You are awesome and I thank you so much for sharing with us. Much love to you and sisters LET’S DO THIS!!!!
Hi LeAnn, I’ve been reading for awhile, but this is my first time commenting. I have to say, I am definitely loving this whole Made to Crave movement! It’s so awesome to see nutrition taken from a Biblical perspective. Those are great tips you shared and congrats on your weight loss; you look awesome! Your recipes ALWAYS look so tasty, by the way!!
Can I just say you look fabulous! Its hard to tell the photos are of the same person – you look so much younger in the “now” photo. Its so encouraging!
You are indeed a rockstar. I admire you so much and I just wanted you to know that you really encouraged me. May God bless you and equip you to continue to help inspire!
Thank you for sharing ~ I love how you decided to see yourself as a child of the King…who is deeply loved no matter what the weight! I needed to hear (read) this today. Thanks again for being a willing vessel…sweet sister in Christ.
LOVE your site!!!!!! Don’t stop blogging! Its my favorite place to read when I go for the computer. You are a sweet inspiration and the cooking is great too! Your weight loss is awesome! I lost 40 lbs over the last 18 months and I know what a commitment it is to turn over your eating habits and the way you see food. Thanks for sharing your story and mapping it out step-by-step for everyone else. Your generous and loving spirit is truly heart warming and I know your efforts will benefit many!
Thank you for sharing this! I’m so glad to read about the pause expected around week 3. I’m between week 3 and 4 of working out/eating healthy and it seems the scale will not budge! Your encouragement was exactly what I needed. Any idea how long this pause might be?
Jessica
Dear LeAnn, I just want to tell you that you have really encouraged me today. I currently weigh around 265lbs and I have lots of mobility problems which make exercise very difficult. I am in constant pain and I have got in the habit of eating when my pain is bad which is why I have gained more than 50lbs in the 3 years since I got hurt. I am encouraged by what you have shared. I know that God loves me and I am going to get a copy of the book you recommended. Thank you for being so caring that you opened your heart to total strangers like me. God bless you. Tina
You look so much younger (not that you’re old) in your after pictures! What a benefit from losing weight….you’ve grown closer to God, look better, feel better, look younger….it just goes on and on.
I am praying for your continued success ! God Bless You and all on this journey to better living !
Thank you for sharing your before and after photos and your story. You are so encouraging to me. I too have a thyroid issue and wish I lived in the Charlotte area so I could make an appointment with Dr. Chilton. I think I need to definitely pick up the book Made to Crave and maybe see if there’s a referral in my area. Thanks for sharing.
Kathy
You truly look AMAZING! I have had fybromylaja for 6 years which is SO HARD! I live everyday in pain. I am 32 years old. God is my ROCK! He gets me through it all. I was put on a medicine 2 years ago that put 30 pounds on me in 1 month. That has been a hard thing for me. The Dr. just took me off the medicine. I have not only been praying that I lose the weight but that I see myself the way our loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ see’s me. I am very grateful for you stories. Each of you at Proverbs 31 Ministries are truly a blessing to me. I thank you for all you do. With love and prayers, Shawnia. Phil.4:13
Oh LeAnn,
How inspired I am from seeing your pictures. You high weight is just about what mine is/was and seeing your loss helps me to see what I can do for myself. I’m so grateful for finding Lysa’s Made to Crave and through her, you. Thank God!
What an encouragement you are! I praise God for you and for your journey and I stand with you in celebration of your current and continued success to fully see yourself through the eyes of God. Through your words, I see this differently now and I will return to your words often as a reminder. Thank you so much for sharing your story. God Bless!
PS. You look fabulous, divine woman of God!
