Split Pea Soup

When the temps are in the teens and my house looks like an icicle, I want soup! We were recently snowbound for a few days so I had to have something simmering on top of my stove. Mmmmmm…. the house smelled warm and inviting. Too bad you needed an icepick to get to my front door!

I want to share my healthy pea soup recipe with you today. First, I have to tell you a little secret… I’m not really fond of peas. I like them raw and I like split pea soup. But cooked peas… blechhhh! A mouthful of slick little orbs of green that gush mush when you bite into them is not at all appetizing to my palette. It’s a texture thing with me.

Now that I have painted such a lovely picture of peas (hahahaha), here’s a healthy version of split pea soup. I used a smoked turkey wing instead of a hamhock for the smoked flavor. Honestly, I couldn’t tell the difference!

For the record… I love this recipe! It’s full of good veggies and great flavor. Even if it is made with peas :)

Split Pea Soup

Ingredients:

  • 1 smoked turkey wing or drumstick
  • 1 lb bag split green peas (discard flavor packet if it comes with one), rinsed and drained
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4-5 carrots, peeled, sliced in half lengthwise, then chopped
  • 5 celery stalks with leaves, chopped
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup parsley
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 10 cups water
  • 2 bay leaves

Throw everything in the pot. Yes, it really is that easy! Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover loosely and simmer for one hour.

Remove turkey and set aside until cool enough to handle. Remove skin and cut up meat. Discard the bones and the skin. Return meat to the pot. Remove bay leaves and discard.

Ladle a big ‘ol helping into a bowl.

Eat.

Lick the bowl.

As you can see, I didn’t like it at all. Have you eaten your veggies today?

Sweetest Blessings,
LeAnn

Sounds delicious! I love split pea soup and don’t have a good recipe. Can’t wait to try it out. Where would I find one smoked turkey wing or drumstick? Can you buy this in the deli at the grocery store?

Leann,
I love that you love split pea soup! Me too! And, I just made a big pot of it, but love your healthier version with more veggies. I include tiny diced white potatoes and may try some sweet potatoes next time too. Cumin is also a nice addtion for variety.

Jolene… I find smoked turkey wings and drumsticks at my grocery store!
Ashley… great idea about adding potatoes…especially sweet potatoes. Cumin is also a great idea! I love it when everyone shares their own tips :)

LeAnn,
This looks and sound wonderful! I agree with you, it is a texture thing about the peas! I love snap peas and split pea soup but I hate regular peas! I was just making my grocery list for the week so this has been added to it. If our deli doesn’t have smoked turkey legs then could I use chicken? I am saving my sweet potatoes to roast them in the oven. :) Thank you for sharing! God bless!

LeAnn — I want you to know that I just watched Lysa’s “Made to Crave” website — while enjoying your “Roasted Chicken & Vegetables.” Good stuff! — the webcast AND the meal. And — I’m pretty excited about your recipe for pea soup, too. My husband was just asking me about pea soup the other day. His mom used to make it when he was young, but I’ve never made it since we’ve been married (30 years!) So — I’m gonna surprise him with pea soup!
Thanks! KK

This looks so good. Love that you can just put it all in the pot at once. I make my split pea with either homemade or store bought chicken broth and add some barley that I’ve soaked the last couple hours. But next time we bbq. a tukey I’m saving the wings and a drum stick for your soup idea.
One week when I was really trying to get more veggies in us, I steamed a cup of brocolli and blended it up and added it to the soup in the last hour of cooking.

Thanks so much for the recipes that you are sharing. I couldn’t wait to try this one…my hubby loves split pea soup…the reviews? Outstanding! He couldn’t say enough and I loved it too….thank you! I was so incredibly happy when I found the smoked turkey wings (huge) at my grocery store. I had never noticed them before. This truly is a wonderful healthy soup.

Hi LeAnn,

I was so looking forward to making this tonight, but realized that I accidently bought dried whole green peas instead of split peas. Is that going to work with this recipe? Also, I have ham (not processed) at home to use, do I need to change the recipe for using that?

Thanks!

Hi Connie,

I have never tried using whole dried peas so I can’t give you a definite answer. However, if it was me, I would just give it a try. I tend to live dangerously like that :)
Also, the ham will work just fine.

Blessings,
LeAnn
